History of Cameliers
Cameliers Guesthouse was taken over by Fusion in 1985. The original building, Stokes Geraldton
Coffee House, has seen a number of uses in it lifetime; as a stopping of point for Camel
Drivers, as quarters for local police and their horses, and as a boarding house. Albert Facey,
in his book “A Fortunate Life” describes his visit to Geraldton and his stay at Stokes Coffee
Palace. After a long a hard life Cameliers had fallen into disrepair. When Fusion took over
Cameliers to provide a low cost accommodation service to people in Geraldton, it had been closed
down by the Health Department. Gradually, room-by-room the building was repaired and opened to
the public. Today Cameliers still bears many of the marks of its long and hard life, but it is
now home to many a traveller. Many have found Cameliers to be a refuge from the challenges and
loneliness of our consumerist world.
